Warner Eagles Wrestling Team
The Warner Eagles wrestling program is thriving under the leadership of head coach Tyson Hume, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams making significant strides this season. As the program grows, so do the expectations for success, both on and off the mat.
“This season, we have seen growth not only in numbers but also in our athletes’ competitive skills and enjoyment of wrestling,” said Hume. “Our wrestlers are learning more about what it means to be a Warner Eagle Wrestler. We hold each other accountable, strive for constant improvement, and celebrate when someone overcomes adversity. Most importantly, I’m proud of the young men and women these athletes are becoming.”
The boys’ team features senior standouts Lubbock Drake and Sean Moore. “Lubbock placed 3rd at last year’s State Tournament in the 165-pound weight class and is hungry for more this season, competing at 175 with a 24-4 record,” said Hume. “Sean Moore, a state qualifier at 150 pounds last year, narrowly missed placing but is on a mission this season, boasting a 26-9 record.” Younger athletes are also stepping up, including sophomore Kail Moore, who is competing in the 150-pound division with an impressive 22-13 record.
The girls’ team has its own stars to watch, led by returning State placer Rachel Torres, who is off to a strong start with a 14-9 record. “Rachel placed 4th at State last year and has been a leader for our girls,” Hume said. State qualifiers Jayden Windrix and Carissa Prock are making big strides and have the potential to podium this year. Freshman Bella Cannon is also turning heads in her first season. “Bella’s strength gives her an edge despite her inexperience, and with a 16-11 record, I believe she will be one to watch as she continues to improve.”
The Eagles have ambitious goals for the season, both individually and as a team. “We want our athletes to assert dominance as soon as the whistle blows,” said Hume. “While I want my athletes to be champions on the mat, it’s more important to me that they become champions in life, prepared to handle any adversity they may face.”
Off-season preparation included strength training, learning freestyle and Greco-Roman techniques, and attending camps. Practices are tailored to address weaknesses identified in competitions, with “GUT check” Wednesdays featuring live wrestling and intense conditioning to build endurance.
The Warner community plays a vital role in the team’s success. “The Warner community’s support has been outstanding,” said Hume. “From parents to businesses like Warner Fitcorps, Ward Drilling & Consulting LLC, and Hume Roofing Co, the encouragement and contributions are invaluable.”
With strong leadership, dedicated athletes, and unwavering community backing, the Warner Eagles are poised for a successful season, embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork.
