MIA HARRIS
WAGONER HIGH SCHOOL
Wagoner High School senior Mia Harris runs cross country and plays on the Bulldog golf team and sees a similarity in approaching both sports.
“I like the running community, but I also like the individual aspect of both sports. I think they’re both super mental in nature so having a good mental frame of mind going into a meet or a match is really important even if, at the time, it’s not something you really want to do,” said Mia.
Mia comes from a family of runners, and she got involved around the seventh grade and she’s continued to improve every year according to her coach Morgan Mills.
“She’s been a leader for our team every year by doing her workouts, never complaining and encourages others to do the same.”
Her virtue of not complaining was put to the test last year when Mia dealt with some injury problems.
“Last year was frustrating. I developed stress fractures in my calves, but it took me a while to realize what was happening until the end of the season. I ran at regionals but even if we had qualified for state, I wouldn’t have been able to run because of the pain. I had to build my calcium levels back up and then rest a lot to get back into running shape but this year it’s been fun to run pain-free.”
Mia is a straight A student and is member of the FCCLA, National Honor Society, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Wagoner High. Mia got into playing golf through her father and ‘it’s something I wanted to share with him.” Her goals for her final year of high school competition are to improve her times in cross country and qualify for state and to get her gold scores down into the 80s. After high school she plans to attend college and study business.
