Some athletes are remembered for their stats, while others are remembered for the example they set. For Vian senior Halli Russell, she hopes it’s both. “My goal was to be a team leader and help develop our team,” Russell said. “I think we have come a long way. Our team has improved on both defense and offense.”
On the diamond, Russell has proven to be a versatile force. “This year, I have played multiple positions, wherever I am needed. I play center field, short stop and catcher,” she explained. Offensively, she’s been consistent, posting a .397 batting average with a .482 on-base percentage this season. But for her, success comes down to effort and mindset. “When I step onto the field, I have the mindset to give it my all physically and I am there to compete at my highest level.”
Her time in softball has already created lasting memories. “My favorite softball memories are winning districts and competing in super-regionals my sophomore year,” Russell said.
But softball is just one part of her packed athletic career. She has also dedicated four years to cheer, balancing competitions alongside her fall softball schedule. “We just competed at Regionals and advanced to state competition this weekend for the second year,” Russell said. “My favorite part of cheer is tumbling. I think that tumbling has helped me in all of my sports with physical fitness, strength and body awareness.”
Cheer has also given her perspective on the influence she holds as a senior. “On Friday nights at the football games, I noticed little girls standing along the fence in front of me, observing me,” she said. “My goal is to be a good example to each of them in and out of competition. I want them to see me give it my all in whatever sport I am competing in and to influence them to be future Wolverines.”
Outside of athletics, Russell has thrived in FFA. “My most proud moments have come from my team of four winning back-to-back state championships in Soil and Water Management,” she said. “FFA has taught me so much and is a phenomenal experience.”
She’s also been a standout on the basketball court, earning offensive player of the year twice. “I hope to contribute and be a leader for our team this season,” Russell added.
For Russell, whether it’s softball, cheer, basketball, or FFA, her impact is felt the same way — through leadership, example, and giving her all.
