Vian Wolverines Football Preview – Presented by Vian Family Dental Clinic

VIAN WOLVERINES

Coach: GARY WILLIS

8-5

OFFENSE

The Wolverines return to the gridiron this fall with an experienced roster having lost only two starters to graduation from last year’s squad that advanced to the third round of the Class 2A playoffs. “Playmakers” may best define the pool of offensive talent including quarterback Masyn Wright (6-0, 185, Jr.), a VYPE Top 100 nominee who used his arm and legs to total 2,125 yards including 28 touchdowns. In his first two years as the Wolverines quarterback, the elusive signal caller has put together back-to-back 1,000 yard plus campaigns running the football. “Masyn is the leader of the team who definitely has Division-I level talent,” said head coach Gary Willis. The West Coast style offense will also be fueled by the speed and determination of VYPE Top 100 candidate Draighton Fletcher (5-7, 160, Jr.) whose speed separates him from would be tacklers to total over 1,500 yards total offense during his sophomore season including 20 sprints to the end zone. Tristan Wiley (6-0, 200, Sr.) returns at tight end with Jacob Brannick (5-10, 165, Sr.) returning to a wide receiver position where he charted 400-plus yards last year. The offensive line will be another “big plus” for the Wolverines anchored by Cash Collins (6-3, 210, Sr.) who has started every game since his freshman season and Nate Cheater (6-0, 280, Sr.) who tips the leverage scales to Vian’s advantage. “Our first option is to run the football,” smiled Willis with confidence, “but we can take advantage of loaded boxes with the passing attack.”

DEFENSE

All but one of 11 defensive starters return to take the field eager to play fast with a certain aggressive nature which is the Vian way led by the team’s two leading tacklers, Masyn Wright at safety and linebacker Riley Ellis (5-8, 180, Jr.). The Wolverines ability to control action on the line of scrimmage will be protected by defensive end Tristan Wiley who will line up next to Cash Collins, Nate Cheater while Peyton Johnson (6-2, 240, Sr.) plays downhill with a high motor at linebacker as well as Draighton Fletcher and Wright securing the Vian secondary. The veteran experience will be a plus this year as Vian opens their 2024 schedule playing three of their first four games on the road but will have a definite home field advantage down the stretch playing three of their final four 2A-II District-4 contests in front of the Wolverines “rowdy crowd” at St. John stadium.
