For Payton Mecom, softball has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. “I am a junior at Stigler, and I started playing softball when I was three,” she said. Over the years, the game has become more than just a sport—it’s a passion that continues to drive her every day.
Family support has played a crucial role in her journey. “I would say my biggest influence would be my mom. She was always at my games, and she made the sport fun,” Mecom shared. That encouragement has helped shape her into the dedicated athlete she is today.
One of the biggest strengths of Stigler softball is the bond between teammates. “Our team chemistry has always been pretty good. We are all best friends off the field, and that helps our chemistry a lot,” she said. That connection translates into a strong and competitive team dynamic.
Mecom takes her role on the team seriously, especially as a leadoff hitter. “My specific role is to get on base. I feel like as a leadoff, it sets the tempo. I focus on base hits when hitting,” she explained. That approach to the game keeps her motivated to keep improving. “My goals and hopes for this season are to have a batting average higher than last year and for us to make it past districts.”
Her journey hasn’t been without its struggles. “The most challenging moment in my sports career would be I’ve struggled with ankle issues. I’ve had two ankle surgeries, and it’s been a battle with my ankle healing. I’ve overcome it with the support of my friends and family,” she said.
Some of her favorite memories come from tournament days. “One of my favorite memories from last season is the tournaments. I loved being involved and spending the day playing,” Mecom said.
Looking ahead, she has big aspirations. “In five years, I see myself playing at the next level and starting radiology school,” she said. With her determination and support system, the future is bright for this standout athlete.
