For Mesa Coulston, her senior softball season is about two things—competing at a high level and enjoying every moment. “My personal goals are to be the best player I can be to help our team succeed. And to enjoy my senior year,” the Porum standout said.
One thing that has stood out to Coulston this season is how close-knit the roster has become. “This year, we have the perfect balance of upper- and underclassman,” she explained. “Coach Keely Hallman created a big sister/little sister program. You play catch with each other, you room with that person on the road, you pick each other up when they are down. It’s made us a closer team.”
That unity, according to Coulston, has been their biggest growth. “Unity,” she said simply, describing the most noticeable improvement within the squad.
With that togetherness comes high expectations. “Our goal is to reach the state tournament,” Coulston said. And she believes they have the tools to make it happen. “We have a good balance of defense and hitting.”
Coulston has been a major contributor in that balance. A versatile athlete, she said, “I play pitcher, first and second.” At the plate, her impact has been undeniable. The senior carries a .481 batting average, a number that highlights her ability to consistently spark the offense.
Her approach to the game is focused and confident. “I look for gaps,” she explained of her mindset when stepping into the box. That preparation is also aided by the team’s new facilities. “Our new weight room has helped a lot.”
When it’s game time, her outlook is simple but powerful: “Play to win.” Coulston also wants her teammates and coaches to remember her for more than just statistics. “That they could rely on me and I was a team player.”
The Porum senior has had plenty of highlights, but one memory stands out. “Playing at Devon Park in OKC,” she said of her favorite moment.
Even though she doesn’t have a hype song, her walk-up music reflects her style. “My walk-up song is Black Dog by Led Zeppelin.”
Looking ahead, Coulston already knows what’s next. “Continue on to college,” she said.
