MIA SCOTT-OKTAHA

Basketball is a family thing in Mia Scott’s home.

“My parents both played basketball in high school. My sister Ava had a great career ahead of me at Oktaha and I’ve been playing since I was three when my mom started coaching a team for us.”

Ava is Mia’s role model, but she has also been a feisty competitor along the way.

“Seeing all that Ava accomplished at Oktaha makes me strive to be more like her and I wish I could have gotten to play with her for a year. But yes, there have been competitive times along the way as well. I remember once we were playing 1-on-1 in the driveway and I blocked her shot and she got mad and jumped on top of me,” Mia laughed.

Mia was the youngest starter on last year’s team that went 18-10 and ended the season in the opening round at the area tournament. She says she learned a lot from that first season as she looked ahead to this year.

“I think we gained a lot of experience as a team last year. I’m not a freshman anymore and hopefully won’t make as many mistakes, and I know more about what to expect this year. We have four starters back from last year and I expect us to go further than we did last year, and it would be great if we could make it to the state tournament.”

Coach Kia Holmes is expecting a big year for Scott.

“Mia is a great ball handler and can score from anywhere on the floor and, in fact, I’d really like to see her shoot more this year. She had tremendous growth her freshman year and we will rely even more on her this year.”

Mia recalls one game in particular from her first year on the varsity in 2024.

“It was in the Gore Tournament against Sallisaw Central and we were the underdogs, but I scored 19 points. and we went on to win the tournament.”

Her goals this year are to average at least 12 points a game and increase her number of assists. In her spare time, Mia likes to be with friends and family and also build things with Legos.

“My grandma got me a Lego set for Christmas one year and I didn’t think I would like it but then I built something and decided it was a lot of fun and I’ve bought more and more sets since.”
