AVERY BROWNING-MHS
It’s been a little less than two years since Avery Browning transferred to Muskogee from Oktaha and he’s enjoying his time as a Rougher where he pitches and plays first base or outfield when he’s not on the mound. He played about half the season his sophomore year, moved in as a full-time starter last year and he was pretty happy with his performance.
“It was one of the better years we’ve had since I’ve been here and I had a 2.3 earned run average (pitching 45 innings with 46 strikeouts). I put more focus on my pitching, and it helped us as a team by limiting opponents to just a couple of runs a game when I pitched,” said Browning who also plays travel ball in the summer.
“Travel ball helped me a lot with school ball because I got a lot more experience and by being around a lot of new people all the time which helped me make friends easier when I came to Muskogee.”
Avery credits his dad for getting him started in baseball and being there all during his career.
“My dad started a T-ball team when I was three or four and as I grew older, he wanted me to try baseball because he had never played it. He coached me until I was 15 and I’ve loved it ever since. I really like being around my friends and having success because baseball is a hard game and it makes you feel good when you have success because baseball is a game where you fail more often than you succeed.”
Avery lost his uncle last year during the season which played a part in a special memory for him.
“We were playing a district game against Broken Arrow, and my uncle had passed away that morning. I decided to go ahead and play the game, and it was one of the best games I’ve ever pitched as I gave up just two runs.”
Coach John Singler has high expectations for Avery as the 2026 season approaches.
“Avery will be a good leader for our team this year. I expect him to be our number one pitcher and will hit somewhere towards the top of the order. I’m really proud of the way he has developed in the last year both in his baseball skills but also in his character and I’m really excited to see how he’ll do this year.”
And Browning discussed those areas the coach laid out.
“As a team leader this year I feel like I need to be encouraging to teammates and not put them down and a guy that they feel they can talk to about matters on and off the field. I’m focusing a lot this year on improving my character by being a better teammate and not getting upset as much while trying to do the best I can. I’d like to keep my ERA under 2.5 and hit .310-.320 and for us to host a regional.”
