When Ke’Lashia Smith puts on the number-1 jersey for the Muskogee Roughers, she welcomes the challenges and responsibility that comes with the single digit uniform.
“Wearing number-1 reminds me to always bring my best everyday, in practice and in games,” said the 15-year old sophomore catcher. “When you wear that number on your back you have to prove you’ve earned the right to wear it. I want to live up to that expectation.”
Muskogee coach Mark Dicus agrees and compliments his starting catcher for her determination to be a playmaker and leader among her teammates.
“Smitty is exciting to watch play because of her skills and softball IQ. Her defensive talent behind the plate is a real plus for us because of her quick reactions and strong arm that holds opposing runners from taking an extra base “
Smith who admits that defense is her favorite part of playing softball, can hardly refrain from smiling when opponents want to try to steal a base.
“I love it when people try to run. I use my quickness and decision making when making a throw. At catcher you have to be quick and aggressive and willing to make plays other won’t and make any play you can get.”
A student of the game of softball, Smith also plays basketball and runs track at Muskogee as well as welcomes the opportunity of maintaining good grades in the classroom.
“A lot of things come easy to me and I think that’s why I enjoy the challenge of my Spanish class to keep me on my toes because I enjoy exploring other cultures.”
A true competitor on and off the field, Smith describes herself as intelligent, encouraging as well as humorous.
“My teammates and coaches know that I’m a person that tries to make jokes. It’s part of who I am and when you have a positive outlook on life and try to lift up others around you, then you’ll have an overall better day as well.”
