Midway’s Porter Duvall – Athlete Spotlight

For Porter Duvall, giving his best is not something reserved for Friday nights, the weight room or the track. It is a decision he believes has to be made every day.

“Hard work is a choice,” Duvall said. “You can choose to give 100 percent in everything you do.”

The Midway High School sophomore carries that approach into football, track and powerlifting, but some of the moments he values most have happened away from competition. Duvall was valedictorian of his eighth-grade class, an accomplishment that reflected his commitment in the classroom. More important to him, however, was getting saved and developing a faith that has changed the way he approaches his life.

“Jesus is the only way to true happiness,” Duvall said. “It changed the way I live and present myself.”

That faith is also connected to the people who have helped guide him. Duvall credits coach C.D. Harjo with influencing him beyond athletics.

“He helped me become a better man of God,” Duvall said.

Teammate Ruger Mayo has made an impression for a different reason. Duvall admires Mayo’s ability to remain positive regardless of the circumstances, an attitude that fits with the environment Duvall appreciates at Midway. Located in Council Hill, the small-town setting is one of his favorite parts of home.

“I like that it’s a small town with a tight-knit community,” he said.

Duvall has found several ways to give back to that community. He is involved in FFA, National Honor Society and FCA while also volunteering at the local community center. He helps his father with the volunteer fire department and serves through his church with Bridging Hunger.

Behind those commitments is a family Duvall said has supported him regardless of the situation. He also credits coaches C.D. Harjo and Simmon Harjo with helping him develop his athletic career.

For Duvall, though, the message he most wants others to know has little to do with an athletic accomplishment or award.

“Jesus died on the cross for you, and he wants to have a relationship with you,” Duvall said. “He will love you on your good and bad days, and he will always be with you.”

As Duvall continues through high school, the standard he has chosen is clear: give everything he has, serve the people around him and allow his faith to guide the person he becomes.
