Fort Gibson’s Brody Scott – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Justin Young Century 21 Realty

Having a big upside is a term coaches and scouts use to talk about the potential an athlete has, and Fort Gibson sophomore Brody Scott is certainly a basketball player that fits that description.

“Brody came to us in seventh grade from Warner and he’s just gotten better each year,” said Tiger basketball coach Todd Dickerson. “He started for us last year at point guard as a freshman and we rarely have a freshman point guard start so I think that tells you what I think about him. He’s an incredible passer, a great ball handler and sees the floor well. His ball distribution makes everyone on the team better. He’s just going to be very good.”

Brody says he started playing basketball with a little mini hoop at his house that his parents got him and then started playing AAU ball in the fifth grade. “I learned a lot and got a lot better playing AAU ball because of the tough competition so transitioning from middle to high school basketball last year wasn’t too difficult after the first couple of games when I saw the speed and pace of the game that I would need to play at,” said Brody. “My brother Blane played when he was in high school and he really kind of motivated me to get better.”

As coach Dickerson noted, it’s rare for a freshman to be to handle the responsibility of the point guard position in a varsity setting but Brody understands what needs to be done. “The point guard spot is so important because you’re responsible for getting the ball up the floor, setting up the offense and knowing all the plays. This season I would like to improve my defense and three-point shooting and have a goal to average around 15 points and 8-10 assists per game.” The Tigers made it to the area semifinals last year so a team goal for Brody is to push on to state this year. He counts as highlights in his young career the team win in the regionals last year against Perkins-Tryon and a 25-point performance he had against Tulsa Hale in the Old Fort Tournament.
