PETER LEE JR.-EUFAULA
Sometimes you’ll find multi-sport athletes that are really into one sport but not so much the other. But that’s certainly not the case with Eufaula senior Peter Lee Jr. who plays football and runs track.
“I love track and don’t do it just to stay in shape for football. I’m really competitive and I’m out there to win in track. I’m not going to play a sport I’m not passionate about.”
He started playing football in kindergarten and added track in seventh grade. He was the leading rusher for the Ironheads this past season with 1164 yards and 15 touchdowns and was the third leading rusher in the district. In track he runs the 200-meter sprint, the 100 sometimes, and the 4X100 and 4X200 relays which have qualified for state the last three years, just missing making the podium by less than a second while setting the school record in both relay events.
Even though track is probably considered an individual event to a large degree, Lee says that senior leadership can play a big role leading up to the events.
“Leadership may not be as important in track at the events because everyone is focused in on their individual responsibilities. But it is important when you’re training for an event because as a senior you want to set a good example. If you slack off when you practice, the freshmen and sophomores will see that and they’ll do it too.”
Practice is also a place where you find teammates that will push you to do your best and Peter has a few guys that have filled that role for him.
“In the past I’ve had Maddox Bridges and Ledger Folsom that have pushed me and now it’s Broc Martin.”
Lee’s goal this year is to qualify for state in the 200 sprint while helping lead the relay team back to state as the leader of a team with several new faces on it.
Peter will continue his football pursuits at the University of Dubuque in Iowa next year and says he would like to be remembered as a good leader who left it all out on the football field and the track.
