Eufaula High School’s Hannah Needham brings energy, leadership and a strong sense of purpose to her role as a varsity athlete, balancing competitiveness with a deep appreciation for teamwork and personal growth.
Needham serves as a utility player but takes on catching duties during school competition. Behind the plate, she embraces one of the game’s most demanding roles. “The most difficult thing is having to make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go,” she said, highlighting the responsibility that comes with leading from the field. She enjoys being involved in every pitch and understands that communication and confidence are essential to keeping the defense organized throughout a game.
Her approach to the game is rooted in consistency and mental preparation. At the plate, Needham follows a routine designed to keep her focused under pressure. “First I breathe, then say a little prayer, then tell myself I know what I’m doing,” she said. “I’m supposed to be in this situation, and I talk myself through the at-bat.”
Needham credits athletics with shaping her mindset, especially when it comes to effort and accountability. “Athletics taught me to always use 110% effort no matter what the situation is,” she said. She also values sportsmanship as an essential, if unwritten, rule of the game, believing the way athletes treat opponents and teammates says just as much as the final score.
Off the field, Needham finds balance through simple joys. She enjoys spending time at the lake with friends and relaxing at home with her dog. In the classroom, English is her favorite subject, and she cites Mrs. Green as her favorite teacher.
Family plays a central role in her motivation. Needham points to her nana, Erma, as her greatest inspiration. “No matter what life threw at her, she was always still so strong,” Needham said. “She pushes me to be a better player and human every day.”
Team chemistry is another cornerstone of her experience. She values both the friendships built over time and the team’s competitive drive. “We always try to have fun no matter what,” she said. Teammates Ava Neil, Briley Gragg and Hannah Beaver each contribute to that environment, whether through leadership or humor, creating a culture that keeps everyone motivated throughout the season.
And when it comes to putting in the work, Needham does not shy away. “The dirtiest uniform is always me or Leah Green,” she said with a laugh, a reflection of her all-out playing style.
