MIDWAY CHARGERS

GIRLS

Coach: Jessi Ross

23-24 Record: 18-6

The 2023 basketball season was a good learning experience for the Midway Lady Chargers as they went 18-6, won their district but fell in the regionals. And with only one starter lost to graduation and a promising group of youngsters in the wings, coach Jessi Ross is looking forward to the 2024 season as a chance to take another step forward in the playoffs.

“I’m very excited for our new year to get underway. We lost just one starter off a very good team, and we’re bring aboard a powerhouse freshman class, so our season has a bright outlook.”

Heading up the group of returning players are two juniors who will make a difference in Reagan Bowling (6-1) and Taylon Ray (5-4).

“These girls are two-year starters and averaged over 20 points a game last year for us,” said Ross. “They come from families that are Midway grads and they’re great leaders even though they’re just juniors. They’re also great kids and very strong academically.”

Unfortunately, the Chargers will be without Bowling for the early part of the season as she underwent foot surgery, however they hope she will be back in mid-January. But on the plus side of the injury ledger is the return of Haily Vanbrunt (5-7, Jr.) who was out most of last year with a knee injury.

“She was a strong forward for us in the first part of the season last year before she was hurt so we’re anxious to have her back this year,” said Ross.

Haily’s sister Briley (5-8) is one of the freshmen that Ross is excited to see and will be a starting forward for the Lady Chargers along with Mylee Smith (5-5).

“Briley is very knowledgeable of the game and a strong force under the basket,” said Ross.

There will be plenty of competition for playing time from seniors Makell Atwell (5-6) and Ashley Walker (5-5), sophomore Kyleigh Schultz (5-3) and freshman Bella Garvin (5-4).
