Warner’s Koulter Drake – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Armstrong Bank of Warner

KOULTER DRAKE

WARNER HIGH SCHOOL

It’s a big year for Warner High senior Koulter Drake as he literally runs for the gold in cross country and track. He qualified for state in cross country all three years, finishing second in the state last year. In track he runs the mile, and two mile runs and relays. He has qualified for state in all four events each year. The team took home the top prize in the two mile relay his freshman year and he finished second in the mile and two mile his freshman and sophomore years and sixth in the mile last year.

In addition to all of his running, Koulter also works at the family business after practice every day.

“When I was young in Oktaha I started playing soccer and one day the coach got me to running around the baseball field and it was easy and that’s when I decided running was for me and I quit soccer and we moved to Warner when I was in the eighth grade,” said Drake.

So far this year, Koulter is doing well according to new coach Tyson Hume.

“Our first meet in Tahlequah we ran with a lot of larger schools, and he placed 20th with a time of 18:09. Next he won the meet at Henryetta with a time of 18:15. The next meet was at Sequoyah Tahlequah which was a real hilly course again with some larger schools and that was more of a struggle so we decided to start training on some hillier terrain and I think it worked because he placed second at the next meet in Muldrow which was kind of hilly and a little longer than a standard course,” said Hume.

Koulter has his goals set for his senior season of running.

“This year I want to win it all in cross country with a time of under 17 minutes. In track we did all right in the two-mile relay last year, but I’d like to qualify and shoot for a better time, and I’d like to see us win the mile relay again. In the two-mile run I’d like to be under 10 minutes and under 4:30 in the mile this year.”

Koulter hopes success this year in track or cross country will help him gain a spot to run at the next level next year.
